2020 Lagavulin 'The Distillers Edition' Double Matured Single Malt Scotch Whisky - 750ML

Product Description

Lagavulin Distillers Edition 2020 is made at the Lagavulin Distillery on the Isle of Islay, Scotland. This distillery has been around since 1816 and is known for its solid and rich Islay malts. This whiskey comes from barley malted over local peat smoke, giving it a distinctive smoky flavor. It is a Single Malt Scotch whiskey. To make this whiskey, the barley is first mashed and fermented to create a wash. Then, it is distilled in copper pot stills. It undergoes aging in two different stages and different casks. The whiskey sits in refilled American and European Oak casks in the first aging stage. It then ages a second time in Pedro Ximenez seasoned re charged American Oak casks with heavily re charged new American Oak ends. This two step aging process adds more flavors and complexity to the whiskey. The Lagavulin Distillers Edition 2020 is aged for several years, and the exact time varies to find the right flavor balance. Using Pedro Ximenez casks in the second aging stage adds a unique sweetness.

Lagavulin Distillers Editions have won many awards at international competitions, showing their high quality. Lagavulin is also well respected and popular among whiskey lovers and collectors. It has 43% alcohol by volume (ABV).

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The aromas are deep and expressive, with dark oak notes and raisins soaked in liquor, highlighting the influence of sweet wine casks. These scents temper the eager peat, wrapping fragrant smoke in rich notes of Oak and wine. Over time, the smoke rises, mirroring the intense flavors present within.

Palate: A natural strength expression starts with an oily and sweet spicy profile. The sweetness is well integrated and never overly sentimental, offering a rich, fruity, raisin like smokiness that embodies dark intentions and roasted malt flavors. As the peat asserts itself, the smokiness intensifies, and a saltiness emerges, creating a drying effect with a hint of espresso coffee grounds. The rich sweetness harmoniously blends with the smoke, salt, and spice.

Finish:

Deeply smoky and delightfully warming with its dark oak spiciness, this drink leaves a lingering smoke in the aftertaste.
